To enquire for the details, send a blank SMS to 450. Here’s the response.

To buy a data bundle send an empty sms to:

  • 442 for 40MB @ksh 250,
  • 443 for 100MB @ksh 499,
  • 446 for 300MB @ksh 999,
  • 447 for 700MB @ksh 1,999
  • 448 for 1GB @ksh 2,499

The money is automatically deducted from your airtime, and you will get a confirmation message confirming the success of your transaction. Oh, and it might be wise to disable automatic updates before connecting to the internet, otherwise your bundle will be used up in a flash.

To check the balance, SMS the word Balance to 450.

Doesn’t work – Topped up 250/-
sent a message with the word ‘activate to 442
tried sending a blank message as well.

Neither worked.
Instead, i received 5 messages in a row with the ‘insufficient funds’ reminder – typical of Safaricom

I am not satisfied with you internet modem. When I charged for the bundle, it does not show the bundle balance. Please correct the problem.
Last time, I charged 250 K. shs to buy 40 MB bundle and it was used up within seconds

Hi Robert, is it possible that automatic updates was on? Or maybe another program downloaded some files in the background.

Currently Safaricom have an offer, for KES 1,000 you get unlimited internet for 7 days. Top up with a thousand, and send a blank message to 555. Enjoy while it lasts.

PS: I am not a Safaricom employee.

Thanks for the information, it was really helpful!

I also get a number of messages when I run out of credit, and not realising it, try and send a text. It’s frustrating but not as much as loss of network and call dropping!

I think safaricom is still the best when it comes to data but with calling – it’s terrible!

Robert

phlexdev - May 5, 2011

Hi Robert,
You can disable updates via
Control Panel -> System and Security -> Windows Update,
then click on Change Settings. Note that it is advisable to keep your computer up to date, so plan to do that as well.
